Why we do what we do

Our primary goal is to change the narrative of life after spinal cord injury from destitute, or even neutral, to upbeat positive terminology. We want other survivors to view this new life as a challenge to conquer, rather than a trial to cope with.

We want YOU to become your best self.

Don’t just survive… You shall

THRIVE.

UNMET NEEDS

Often there are things people recovering from a spinal cord injury wish they had during the rehabilitation stage, such as –

  • Mental health counseling from day 1

  • A better understanding of:

    • the healing process and that recovery doesn’t taper or end after 1-2 years post injury

    • what my body was going through during the first year of “spinal shock”

    • the words, “neurological progression”

  • An incomplete spinal cord injury support group

  • An SCI mentor

  • A better appreciation for “planning, preparing, prioritizing and pacing”, especially pacing

  • Realistic expectations for how and when to return to work

  • Strategies for managing a compromised gastrointestinal system, constipation, sexual health, etc.

What Helped Get Us Through This Difficult Stage –

  • An unwavering choice to be as self-sufficient as possible

  • Great advice and a lot of positive energy from rehabilitation clinicians

    • plan, prepare, prioritize and pacing

  • Pool therapy

  • Acupuncture treatments

  • Mental health counseling

  • Staying socially engaged

  • Community, especially at physical therapy gyms

  • Going back to work, accommodations (schedule, technical, etc.) where helpful, and progressively building up hours

How We Can Improve Outcomes –

  • Community of people to ask questions that have had spinal cord injuries and have experience with the new experiences you're going through

  • Success stories

    • Success may mean something different to everyone, but testimonials can provide examples of past injured people who got their life back

  • A single resource of location that contains a list of resources for everything related to a spinal cord injury recovery
